How to make a custom QR code

QR codes are located in the Communication Resources share  drive.

For a QR code without a central icon, use qr-creator.com/url.php.

  • Keep the URL as short as possible. For example, use “http://FirstUnitarianToronto.org” instead of “http://www.FirstUnitarianToronto.org” want. Leave off the www to shorten the URL. This will minimize the number of tiles in the QR code.
  • Set Size/Magnification to 12.
  • Set colour to #013775 (Regal Blue).
  • Set Error Correction to at least 15%.

To include space in the middle for a custom icon, go to qr-creator.com/icon.php.

  • For a quick and dirty QR code, set icon to “Fav icon on a square base”.
  • This will add a white  square in the middle, then bring the image into an image editor, and:
    • Replace the black square with white.
    • Remove the partial blue squares.
    • If the center space is 100×100, add Sunburst-for-QR-codes (in the FirstU images folder) as the centre image.

Tips & Tricks:

  • Always check the generated QR code to see that it is defined to go to our site rather than a tiny URL defined by the QR code creator. For example, check using qreader.online.
  • Keep the encoded URL as small as possible so the QR code can a minimum of dots. For example, encode http://FirstUnitarianToronto.org/OOS, then define that URL as a redirect (Tools > Redirection) to go to the real, longer URL (https://www.firstunitariantoronto.org/wp-content/sermons/OOS/FirstU%20Order%20of%20Service.pdf)

QR code for WIFI

  • Use genqrcode.com.
  • The link is something like: WIFI:T:WPA;S:First-Unitarian-Public;P:unitarian;; (Type = WPA; Network = First-Unitarian-Public; Passcode = unitarian)
