Sermon by Shawn Newton.
This Sunday, we’ll celebrate the first night of Chanukah by lighting our new electrified menorah (oh, the myriad ways we’re adapting to changing circumstances!), just after Stan Yack, our resident cantor, chants the traditional blessings. We’ll all then sing what I hope is a rousing rendition of “Light One Candle” (start practising now!). My sermon, “More than a Miracle,” will invite us into a more nuanced understanding of the Chanukah story that I believe has something to offer us all. The choir will sing Moses Hogan’s sublime setting of “This Little Light of Mine.” And we’ll end the service, with a nod to the approaching Yule, by joining in singing “Deck the Halls.”
