Sermon by Rev. Shawn Newton.
It’s been often said that who we really are is revealed in moments of crisis. Perhaps that is so, to some degree. But what if it has more to do with our level of preparation? In my sermon on Sunday, I’ll be speaking to the process of building up our character for the moments that matter most.
On a Sunday morning a few weeks ago, Gaby Byrnes shared her stunning rendition of We Shall Be Known by Mamuse. This Sunday, Gaby will return to help us all learn this powerful, soulful song. Since everyone but Gaby will be muted, we can each boldly experiment with creating beautiful harmonies of our own! If you want to practise in advance, here are the lyrics:
We shall be known by the company we keep
By the ones who circle round to tend these fires
We shall be known by the ones who sow and reap
The seeds of change, alive from deep within the earth
It is time now, it is time now that we thrive
It is time we lead ourselves into the well
It is time now, and what a time to be alive
In this Great Turning we shall learn to lead in love
In this Great Turning we shall learn to lead in love
It was a pleasure to have with us last Sunday Linda Curley, the Executive Director of the Birchmount Bluffs Neighbourhood Centre, this month’s Share-the-Plate partner. Linda described their ongoing efforts to reduce poverty in our city. I hope, if you feel moved to do so, that you will support their good work. You can make a contribution through First Unitarian’s Canada Helps page.
In faith and love,
Shawn
