FirstU at a Glance

First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto is a vibrant, diverse, intergenerational community of people from across Toronto who come together seeking answers to their questions about life, healing for their hurts, and inspiration to live into their best selves within our complicated world.

First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto was founded in 1845 by 15 British and Irish immigrants. Since then, we have has 23 settled ministers. We are currently looking for our next settled minister. Our previous two settled ministers each stayed for seventeen years.

Our home at 473 Oakwood is our fourth “permanent” home in Toronto. We moved in in August 2025.

We are governed by a 9-member volunteer Board of Directors. They are charged with focusing on the “Big Picture”, i.e., policies relating to the overall vision, goals and health of the congregation.

We have five part-time staff members and a large roster of volunteers. Learn more about our staff and volunteers.

We have a religious education program for children, youth and adults, led by our Director of Lifespan Religious Education.

We have about 220 members. To be a member you must sign the membership book and make an annual financial contribution of any amount. Members may vote at our semi-annual congregational meetings.

There are also many, many friends of the congregation who regularly attend services and programs, and contribute to our financial wellbeing. Friends and other observers are welcome to attend congregational meetings, but cannot vote.
