WHO'S
AT FIRST?
First Unitarian has
about 300 members plus many non-member friends.
A
congregational directory which lists all members and supporters as well as current Board members, Convenors,
committee chairs and other key figures around
the church may be purchased from the Bookshop in Workman Hall after Sunday services.
THE MINISTER
The Minister delivers most Sunday sermons, provides short-term and crisis
counseling, and
conducts rites of passage (child dedications, weddings, memorial services) for our
members and their immediate families.
The
Minister is always eager to meet newcomers and help people find their way in our busy community.
Just call
the office to make an appointment.
THE
LAY CHAPLAINS
provide rites of passage
(child dedications, weddings and services of union, funeral and memorial services)
for members of the general public.
There is a
regular fee schedule for services.
Our
chaplains can be reached through the church office or
online at
http://www.firstunitariantoronto.org/chaplain_request.htm .
SMALL GROUPS
Small Groups focus on a
variety of interests, but have one thing in common.
They are
the best place to make new friends.
That's
because small groups meet regularly, always welcome newcomers, and include a time to
share your perspective with others.
They are
always large enough for an interesting discussion but intimate enough to get to know
everyone well.
Newcomer Orientations
to Unitarianism and our
congregation, and brief tours, are conducted from the base of the tower beginning 10
minutes after the close of each Sunday Service (September through May).
In-depth evening introductions to our religion are conducted by our
ministers frequently throughout the year. You are cordially invited
to attend. To receive a a nametag, be sure to sign the Visitor
Register in the narthex outside Sunderland Hall.

PARKING
during Sunday Services is
available in the lots across the street . When this
lot is full, you may park at the curb on Avenue Road south of St. Clair or on
Forest Hill Road north of St. Clair.
THE CHURCH OFFICE (Room 102)
located through the double doors to the right of the main entrance, is the
administrative hub of the church. It is normally staffed Sunday mornings and
every business day of the year from 9:00-3:30.
There is often a telephone volunteer who can answer routine questions. Our Church Administrator,
Jane Tuomi can answer many administrative questions and process space rentals and room bookings.
All
committee meetings and other use of space during the week must be arranged
through the office. |
THE
LIBRARY/CHAPEL
is located in the
northwest corner of the 3rd level, two half-flights above the front entrance (above
the Level 1 washrooms).
It houses
our circulating collection of books relating to religion and is available for
meetings and for small weddings.
During
Sunday services, a video feed of the service may be viewed on a large TV in this
room.
THE BOOKSHOP
is located in Workman
Hall, is open following the services on Sundays, and sells recent sermons and other
Unitarian books and materials.
BABIES & CHILDREN
Child care for infants
and very young children is available in Room 205 during Sunday Services. This room
is located directly behind the chancel area of Sunderland Hall.
Exit
through the doors at the right-front of Sunderland, take the stairs up half a
flight, and keep turning left. We love
our children, but sometimes the worship service tries the patience of small ones. A
live video feed to a large TV monitor is available in the Library/Chapel during the
service for parents with young, active children.
Twice a month older
children usually spend their first ten minutes on Sunday in the adult service. Then they
recess to their regular Religious Education
classes. For further information, see the volunteer in the R.E. Program office (Room
108).
A youth group for those 13 years and older meets on Sundays and during the week.
WASHROOMS
are located through the
double doors to the right of the main entrance, across from the church office on the
ground level; and in the hallway beyond Workman Hall, past the kitchen, on the 3rd
level. One of the
3rd level washrooms is wheelchair accessible.
WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBILITY
Our church building is
almost totally wheelchair accessible. The
elevator is located down the long hallway past the church office. An
elevator key is available from the office.
Level 1 is
the lower hall; level 2 is the sanctuary; level 3 is Workman Hall, the accessible
washroom and the nursery. Level 4 is the Religious Education wing.
GREAT IDEAS,
CONCERNS
AND COMPLAINTS
|
Whenever you have a Great
Idea--about anything relating to the life of our congregation--don't hide your light
under a bushel!
In a
sense, our religious community is the sum of its members' best ideas.
If it's a
matter of congregational policy or governance, speak to the volunteer in the office.
S/he can
introduce you to a member of our Board of Trustees.
If it
relates to the Sunday Service, speak to a minister or to the worship leader.
For other
ideas, consult the list of key people in the Congregational Directory to determine
who should hear it--or just ask the office volunteer for the appropriate name.

Are you concerned about
the circumstances of a member? Let a
minister or a Pastoral Visitor or a Caring Committee member know.
(They’re
the ones with a red heart on their nametags.) We are a
community only if we look after each other.
Finally, if you have a complaint about something relating to our building, our
activities, or our organization, please let the same people know who should hear
your Great Ideas on the same topic.
