Unitarian Congregation of Toronto
Toronto First has worked on development projects in
Central America since 1997 with the goal of building understanding between people
and improving the social, economic and living conditions in the poorest areas.

Programa de Reconstrucción Rural
El Programa de Reconstrucción Rural
(
PRR) has been World Accord’s partner NGO in Honduras since
1984. It cosponsors the projects and
provides accommodations and logistical support.

Located in
La Buena Fe
, PRR was founded in 1983, as an affiliate of the
International Institute for
Rural Reconstruction. At the core of PRR’s programming is
an integrated and holistic approach to socio-economic development that focuses on
four core areas: health, economic improvement, education, and social organization. Since its inception, the organization has developed strong programming
in each core area, including the creation and operation of a medical and dental
clinic at La Buena Fe.

PRR works in
26 communities in the departments (provinces) of Santa Barbara and Comayagua, and is
currently serving 1,200 rural families. |

Mujeres
en Acción
Mujeres
en Acción (MeA - Women in Action), provides training for indigenous women
in 26 rural communities in central Guatemala, many of who were widowed by
the long civil war. The
Center’s programs include the Guatemala Peace Accord, Women’s Rights,
Preventative Health Care, Girls' Education, Sustainable Agricultural
Techniques and Small Business/Coop Management. Graduates
of the Agriculture and Business programs are eligible for MeA’s
Micro-Credit Loan Program which enables them to set up their own
micro-businesses, achieving a measure of economic independence and
providing for a better life for themselves and their children.
MeA
sponsors the Construction Expeditions in Guatemala and provides our
logistical support.

Youth
Soccer Association
The Swansea Soccer Association offers soccer programs to boys and girls
in western Toronto.
In 2000 the children began donating their
gently used uniforms to share with children in Central America.
The Grimsby Town
Youth Soccer Club was founded in 1973 with a handful of teams
and has grown to serve over 1,700 youth from pre-school through to young
adult. In 2007 the children began sharing their uniforms.
To
date over
3000 uniforms have
been collected and distributed to
one and two room
schools in Guatemala and Honduras
and
El Salvador
and Cuba.
In 2008 the
Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association began shipping soccer uniforms
to schools and youth groups
