The Central America Community Development project is the result of a partnership formed between World Accord and Toronto First in 1999.

First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto

Toronto First has worked on development projects in Central America since 1997 with the goal of building understanding between people and improving the social, economic and living conditions in the poorest areas.

World Accord

World Accord is a faith-based human resource and community development NGO, located in Waterloo, Ontario. Since 1980, World Accord has provided programs, which allow the poor in the developing world to break the cycle of poverty through their own efforts. World Accord works at the grass roots level through partnerships with, and under the direction of, indigenous NGO’s, facilitating local solutions to local problems in seven countries. Major Canadian funding partners include CIDA, the World Hunger Fund and the Wild Rose Foundation of Alberta.

World Accord has been sponsoring volunteer expeditions in Central America since 1995

Programa de Reconstrucción Rural

El Programa de Reconstrucción Rural ( PRR) has been World Accord’s partner NGO in Honduras since 1984. It cosponsors the projects and provides accommodations and logistical support.

Located in La Buena Fe , PRR was founded in 1983, as an affiliate of the International Institute for Rural Reconstruction. At the core of PRR’s programming is an integrated and holistic approach to socio-economic development that focuses on four core areas: health, economic improvement, education, and social organization. Since its inception, the organization has developed strong programming in each core area, including the creation and operation of a medical and dental clinic at La Buena Fe.

PRR works in 26 communities in the departments (provinces) of Santa Barbara and Comayagua, and is currently serving 1,200 rural families.

Mujeres en Acción

Mujeres en Acción (MeA - Women in Action), provides training for indigenous women in 26 rural communities in central Guatemala, many of who were widowed by the long civil war. The Center’s programs include the Guatemala Peace Accord, Women’s Rights, Preventative Health Care, Girls' Education, Sustainable Agricultural Techniques and Small Business/Coop Management. Graduates of the Agriculture and Business programs are eligible for MeA’s Micro-Credit Loan Program which enables them to set up their own micro-businesses, achieving a measure of economic independence and providing for a better life for themselves and their children.

MeA sponsors the Construction Expeditions in Guatemala and provides our logistical support.

Youth Soccer Association

The Swansea Soccer Association offers  soccer programs to  boys and girls in western Toronto. In 2000 the children began donating their gently used uniforms to share with children in Central America.

The Grimsby Town Youth Soccer Club  was founded in 1973 with a handful of teams and has grown to serve over 1,700 youth from pre-school through to young adult. In 2007 the children began sharing their uniforms.

To date over 3000 uniforms have been collected  and distributed to one and two room schools in  Guatemala and Honduras and El Salvador
and Cuba.

In 2008 the Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association began shipping soccer uniforms to schools and youth groups
